New research indicates that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
